Colonoscopy Golytely (Colyte) Preparation Instructions This procedure is performed in the Gastrointestinal Unit at Hartford Hospital. You will be asked to report to either location for your colonoscopy at Hartford Hospital 85 Jefferson Street, Hartford, Suite 300, 45 minutes before time shown above. Hartford Hospital, Admitting, 80 Seymour Street, 60 minutes before time shown above. You need to be adequately prepared for your procedure. The following steps are to help you prepare for your examination. If you have any questions with the following instructions, please call the office at (860) 548-7336 for clarification. Please note the following preparation is done the day before your colonoscopy. A clear liquid diet will be followed for 24 hours before your procedure (Click Here for the Clear Liquid Diet document). Please obtain a COLYTE prescription from your surgeon, along with a prescription for Reglan 10 mg. (see instructions for the use of this liquid prep) You are not to use aspirin, iron compounds, blood thinners, arthritis medication, or vitamin E for one week before your procedure. This is to help decrease bleeding that may occur if a biopsy is taken. Please let your medical doctor know if you are temporarily discontinuing this medication. All other regularly scheduled medications can be taken, i.e.: High blood pressure and cardiac medications. It is a regulation of the hospital that you have someone drive you for this procedure. Your stay will be approximately 2 hours. You will be unable to drive yourself due to the sedation used during the procedure. Your exam will be cancelled if you fail to follow this requirement. Golytely (Colyte) Colonoscopy Preparation Golytely (Colyte) is a mildly salty solution that is an effective cleansing agent for the gastrointestinal tract if taken according to directions. You will be given a prescription for this solution. It is available at most pharmacies. A normal diet may be eaten including breakfast, until 11:00AM the day before the exam. At this point, only clear liquids may be taken until the morning of the exam. DO NOT TAKE MILK OR MILK PRODUCTS. 2:00PM Take the Reglan 10 mg. tablet. 3:00PM Take the 8 ounces of Golytely (Colyte) every 15 to 20 minutes until the entire gallon is completed. It is advised to refrigerate the Golytely prior to and during this bowel preparation. You may flavor Golytely by adding one (1) canister of any flavored Crystal-Lite drink mix (NO RED). PLEASE NOTE: An excellent bowel preparation is essential for a successful colonoscopy. Please follow the instructions carefully. If nausea develops, skip one dose of Golytely, then continue drinking 8 ounces every 15 to 20 minutes. Bowel movements should start about one hour after beginning the Golytely; occasionally, however, they may not start for several hours.
